Multishock Compression Properties of Warm Dense Argon

Warm dense argon was generated by a shock reverberation technique. The diagnostics of warm dense argon were performed by a multichannel optical pyrometer and a velocity interferometer system. The equations of state in the pressure-density range of 20-150 GPa and 1.9-5.3 g/cm(3) from the first- to fourth-shock compression were presented. The single-shock temperatures in the range of 17.2-23.4 kK...

Thomson Scattering in Warm Dense Matter

The scattering of photons in plasmas is an important diagnostic tool. The region of warm dense matter can be probed by x-ray Thomson scattering. The scattering cross section is related to the dynamic structure factor S(k, ω). We focus on the contribution of free electrons to the dielectric function which is calculated in the Born–Mermin approximation. The inclusion of collisions modifies the dy...

Dynamic confinement in spherical geometry for WDM experiments

The ”WDM” (Warm Dense Matter) collaboration proposes to investigate the radiation properties of matter under extreme conditions created by the intense SIS-100 heavy ion beam at FAIR [1]. The ion beams expected at this facility will be able to heat matter within a short time, so that the condition of isochoric heating which is preferable for heavy ion beam experiments is fulfilled. To start the ...

Creation of High Energy Density in Matter with Heavy Ion Beams for Equation of State Studies

Precise equations of state (EOS) measurements of matter under extreme conditions driven by heavy ion beams require proper target configurations to create well defined states of the studied material. The aim of this work is to evaluate the potential of the SIS-18 heavy ion beam at GSI to produce samples of matter at high energy density suitable for accurate EOS measurements. First the basic prin...

Observations of continuum depression in warm dense matter with x-ray Thomson scattering.

Detailed measurements of the electron densities, temperatures, and ionization states of compressed CH shells approaching pressures of 50 Mbar are achieved with spectrally resolved x-ray scattering. Laser-produced 9 keV x-rays probe the plasma during the transient state of three-shock coalescence. High signal-to-noise x-ray scattering spectra show direct evidence of continuum depression in highl...
